Wedding Ceremony Music: The Essential Guide By Oscar Flanagan, Professional Wedding Musician

Choosing your ceremony music is about more than just filling the silence; it’s about setting the tone for the most important walk of your life. I’ve put this guide together to help you structure your ceremony and make sure the music works perfectly with the flow of your day.

The Build-Up (15 Minutes)

Your guests will usually start arriving about 15 minutes before the ceremony begins. This is the "prelude", it’s all about building a bit of excitement while keeping everyone relaxed. I usually recommend a mix of acoustic instrumentals or soft, chilled-out vocals to set the mood while people find their seats.

The Entrance (1 Song)

This is the big one. You only need one song for the aisle, but timing is everything. Most aisles take between 30 and 60 seconds to walk. The beauty of having me play live is that you don’t have to worry about the song being too long or the "best bit" happening after you’ve already reached the front. I can tailor the song so the chorus hits exactly when you step into the room.

The Signing (2 Songs)

While you’re signing your certificate, there’s a natural lull in the ceremony that usually lasts about five to seven minutes (depending on how speedy your photographer is). I suggest picking two songs here. The first should be something sentimental, and the second should be a bit more mid-tempo to start lifting the energy for the celebration ahead.

A quick note for UK couples: Consider having a celebrant for complete freedom over content, time and location. If you are having a civil ceremony, the law states your music cannot have any religious references, so keep that in mind when picking your favourites Alex Warren - Ordinary is banned, as is Beyoncé Halleluja!

The Grand Exit (1 Song)

This is your "just married" moment. You want something high-energy and joyous. If your venue has a short aisle, you need a song that kicks off instantly. If you choose a track with a long, slow intro, you’ll be out the door before the music actually gets going! Because I’m playing live, I can jump straight to the chorus or the high-point of the song the second you turn to walk back down the aisle.

Something Truly Unique: Your Own Song

Have you ever seen Tom Fletcher’s wedding speech song to his wife? It’s legendary because it was completely personal to them.

I offer a bespoke songwriting service where I can write a brand-new song specifically for your new husband or wife. We can include all those little details—how you met, your private jokes, and your plans for the future.

If the idea of giving a traditional speech feels a bit daunting, I can perform this song for you at the top table. It’s a brilliant way to say everything you want to say without the pressure of a public speaking gig. It moves the focus onto the music while still being the most personal moment of the day.
